IXNOS Architects Residence in Harmonic Lines. Facade.

The existing building is a typical example of an early 20th century residence in the city of Chania. It is a ground-floor stone building with a tiled roof, with a total area of 110 m2 built in 1939 in the area of Nea Chora.

Design Process

The object of the study is the conversion of the existing residence into a tourist accommodation. The interventions in the shell of the building mainly concern the maintenance of the supporting structure and the replacement of the old roof as well as the highlighting of the characteristic architectural decoration of the facades.

As regards the internal arrangement of the spaces, changes were made to the layout of the floor plan in order to meet the new needs. Special importance was also given to the entrance. Visitors enter the residence through the entrance, which is located on an urban, public street with noise and constant traffic. Our aim is to transfer the visitor from this noisy and intense environment to a calm, relaxed and private space. We orient and develop the residence towards the private garden, in the southern part of the property, organizing daily life around it.

Elements such as the wooden frames, the tiles of the existing floor as well as some old furniture, were repaired and reused in the project forming a new contemporary aesthetic with references to the classical elements of the building.

What people say

High aesthetics, respect and professionalism are the characteristics of the two architects we chose to undertake the renovation and conversion of our old house into a tourist accommodation. From the creative phase- the design and the study- to its implementation, our collaboration was flawless. After all, the result rewarded us all, the architects for the study and the impeccable design but also us-  as owners – for our choice. Thank you for everything!
